Earlier this week, Ubisoft gave the world a teaser trailer for something Assassin’s Creed related, and today confirmed that we are indeed getting a new title in the series. The new title, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, treads new territory for the series. This is the first time the series has explored Japan, as it goes to Feudal Japan. Starring Yasuke, a real-life historical figure, and Japan’s first (and only) non-Japanese samurai, hailing from Africa originally, and a female Shinobi, Naoe. Ubisoft has also released a date of November 15.

You will be able to switch seamlessly between these two heroes, as this seems to be the trademark of this particular dev house of Ubisoft Quebec, having also crafted Assassin’s Creed Odyssey and Syndicate. Both of those titles featured dual protagonists, but not the ability to switch at will in the story.

In the trailer, you can also see Ubisoft’s take on Feudal Japan, a setting very familiar to a lot of gamers. I’m very interested to see it in action, as I love the setting and Ubisoft has a penchant for great detail in their renditions of these classical settings. From the PlayStation preorder listing, we are told that we will see the “captivating open world of feudal Japan, from spectacular castle towns and bustling ports to peaceful shrines and war-ravaged landscapes.” Also mentioned was changing weather and seasons, and reactive environments. The seasons and weather bits are especially interesting, indicating that the story could take place over a good stretch of time.

Check it out in the reveal trailer below:

Looks like the gameplay will also vary for each protagonist as well. As a Shinobi, Naoe will focus on stealth and agility to avoid detection and keep enemies on their toes. Yasuke will be all about precision and power. Each character will also receive different gear, have differing skill trees and progression. Also in what sounds to me like a mechanic from Brotherhood, you can amass a network of spies with varying unique abilities to keep you abreast of the goings on in Japan.

“Create a fully customizable hideout for your growing shinobi league as you train your crew, craft new gear, interact with key characters, and choose your base’s layouts, decorations, and accessories,” the preorder listing also states.

Shadows is the first entry to take place in Feudal Japan, and one in my opinion that has been long overdue. I’m looking very forward to diving into the saga of Naoe and Yasuke, and can’t wait to see what Ubi brings to the table of games set in this exciting era. See you November 15th!
