Legends. Icons. Pioneers. There are tons of adjectives that describe a band like Descendents. Only one really says it all: Punk. We at PCS have seen our share of legendary punk acts at The Fillmore Charlotte. Bad Religion, Dropkick Murphys, Alkaline Trio, etc. Now it’s time for Milo to go to Charlotte, and they brought some very fun friends with them. Let’s take a trip to ‘Merica with some Pop Punk pioneers.
NOBRO
NOBRO brought their girl powered, chaotic brand of punk. They traveled all the way from our great neighbor to the north, and brought it hard and heavy. NoBro is wild. Trying to bring a little flavor with them, they asked the crowd about the local NFL team, the Carolina Panthers, and were meant by a resounding chorus of boos. (as a fan I can also say… the panthers do indeed suck) The lead singer Kathryn McCaughey then asked if she should remove the Panthers shirt she was wearing. This question got a much different reaction. If you’ve seen other NOBRO performances, you know this is a common gimmick. It was humorous here, as she remarked that she usually doesn’t get to this part that early. They came in and did what NOBRO does best: get a crowd going.
Frank Turner & The Sleeping Souls
Frank Turner does a LOT of shows. Prolific isn’t a strong enough word, as he made sure to tell us, this was his 3,118th show. Frank has been a mainstay in the Punk world. He started his rocking life in his former post-hardcore band Million Dead. Later, he pivoted to a solo acoustic act. His music is known for heartfelt lyrics, pathos, and emotional grounding. While I do wish he had performed my personal favorite song, “Plain Sailing Weather,” most of his songs connect with you emotionally. If you prefer your punk a little more folksy and feeling, Frank Turner is your guy.
Starting with a great performance of “I Still Believe” and introducing us to his band The Sleeping Souls, letting the world know that ‘Something as simple as rock n roll would save us all’. Of course being a Brit, he did have to give us Americans a little hard time, as he told us about making a song in 2016 (What a year that was, along with every year after, right?) named “Be More Kind”. I found myself absolutely vibing with this man, a very genuine guy. He just puts off the best vibes. I honestly have to give his set the set of the night, (Sorry, Descendents) as he brought a vibe to the show that lasted the rest of the night.
The Crowd definitely had that feeling, as their voices rang more loudly during this set, than they did all night. For a guy who makes “Positive Songs For Negative People” He has the most genuine vibes. Ending this set with “4 Simple Words” and getting that crowd dancing, Frank owned the night.

Descendents
Milo opened up with a little talk about the Winter Olympics, Leading to a loud USA! chant. Milo shut that down, saying he couldn’t chant that, because, ya know, “Everything Sux”. And the Crowd goes wild! Hard and heavy right off the bat, with tons of moshing, we came for a punk show, and that’s what they brought. The Punk vibes were immaculate. They seemed to bring every hit they’ve had in their long history, and the crowd was definitely ready for this.
Over 40 years of punk rock catchiness and attitude were on show. From the soaring choruses of “‘Merican” to classic punk stylings of Bikeage, there was something for punks of every age to vibe to. Descendents have been around this genre for a long time, but they haven’t even begun to show a loss of step. We got a crazy 33 song set list, and they kept the crowds attention and energy captive the whole set. By the time everyone was ready to retire to their “Suburban Homes” Descendents hit us with a round of encores and sent us all home spent and happy even with a few punk rock brawls breaking out. Big shout out to the staff and security for getting to that fast and simply, and defusing that situation. Ended the night as a great punk rock show, with some amazing acts.
